This qualification reflects the role of allied health assistants who provide assistance to allied health professionals under predetermined guidelines. Depending on the setting, work may include following treatment plans for therapeutic interventions and/or conducting programs under the regular direct, indirect or remote supervision of an allied health professional.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 80 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.
There are 11 units of competency in this course;

  1. CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people
  2. CHCCOM005 Communicate and work in health or community services
  3. BSBSTR401 Promote innovation in a team environment
  4. HLTAAP001 Recognise healthy body systems
  5. HLTINF001 Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures
  6. BSBMED301 Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately
  7. HLTAHA001 Assist with an allied health program
  8. CHCCCS020 Respond effectively to behaviours of concern
  9. CHCCCS010 Maintain a high standard of service
  10. HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety
  11. NAT10859001 Work effectively in the Weight Management Industry

Course Overview

Through this qualification, you will develop the essential skills and clinical knowledge needed to work in healthcare settings, such as hospitals, specialist and general practices, aged care facilities, dentists, and allied health professions.

As an Allied Health Assistant, you will be qualified to work under the direction of professional staff such as nurses, doctors, social workers, diversional therapists, physiotherapists, speech pathologists and occupational therapists, just to name a few.

Your role will include assisting senior staff and may include visiting clients, preparing written and verbal reports, and helping with personal care that clients or carers may not be able to undertake.
With our ageing population, increased focus on primary health care and the fast rate of growth within the industry, this qualification will provide continuing opportunities as roles associated with allied health will continue to increase.

This nationally recognised qualification will be a rewarding career choice, but can also lead to may other opportunities and open the doorway to further career options in an allied health specialisation.

Essential entry requirements

Entrants to the Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance must:

  • have the ability to use computers, to email, send and write word documents and to use basic spreadsheets.
  • have access to the internet (whilst all of the learning materials can be downloaded via pdf, internet access would be required to download the documents and to upload assessments).

The Australian College of Weight Management & Allied Health undertakes competency based assessment; there are no exams. This approach means that our students can’t receive a “fail” mark on their assignments. If an assignment is not satisfactory, the student is able to reattempt the assignment with the support of the education team and their tutor where needed. Competency Based Learning means that we train our students to be competent rather than producing graduates that are simply able to pass tests or examinations.
